Cathedral Institute - Singing the Lord's Song: Music and our Encounter with God

Six talks to get you thinking, and maybe singing… Cheer up those winter nights with six talks that explore the relationship between music and our relationship with God. Starting on January 15 and running for the following 5 Monday evenings, from 7pm–8pm.

We will explore how our discipleship can be shaped and developed by different types of music. Topics to be discussed include Anglican Choral music, contemporary popular music, music which examines the theme of Remembrance, Taizé chants and the compositions of Gustav Holst.

Speakers include Canon Harriet, David our Master of the Choristers, Kitty a Cathedral Reader, Canon Graeme Smith, a Canon of Honour at the Cathedral and Marilyn Billingham, a PhD student at Bristol University. It promises to be a fascinating and stimulating set of talks, with plenty of opportunity for comment and questions, to help us reflect on the important role that music plays in our discipleship and understanding of the divine. A full programme with further information will be published in the new year.

Dates for the diary: Mon 15 Jan; Mon 22nd Jan; Mon 29th Jan; Mon Feb 5th; Mon Feb 12th; Mon Feb 19th. 7pm to 8pm in the Bishop Kenneth Room at Portsmouth Cathedral. A recommended £5 donation is suggested, and tickets can be booked here.
