About the Exhibition
Explore the story of a city shaped by the sea, faith and everyday people at Portsmouth Cathedral’s My vill of Portsmouth exhibition, created as part of the city’s centenary celebrations.
From its earliest beginnings as a small medieval settlement in 1180 to its development into Britain’s only island city, the exhibition traces Portsmouth’s journey through time in an engaging and accessible way. Located within the Cathedral, a building that has stood at the heart of the city for over 800 years, it offers a unique setting in which to discover Portsmouth’s past.
Visitors are invited to explore the exhibition through historic artefacts, images, information boards and interactive screens, alongside personal stories that reveal how major events were experienced by local people. These moments include times of conflict and resilience, life shaped by the sea, and the Cathedral’s own transformation from parish church to the “Cathedral of the Sea”.
Your visit supports Portsmouth Cathedral, helping to maintain this historic building as an important part of the city and its community.
