The purpose of the Institute is to promote public debate and exploration of the most important questions of ethics, the common good and human flourishing as they relate to the City of Portsmouth, the Isle of Wight and south-east Hampshire.

We help the Cathedral fulfil its strategic aim to be an ‘outward looking community’ characterised by ‘partnership and engagement’ in ‘building a culture of social responsibility and contributing to the common good’.

We are committed to:

  • Identifying the major problems, issues and questions which affect the people of City and Diocese of Portsmouth

  • Enabling public exploration of these problems, issues and questions

  • Encouraging ethical debates in all aspects of civic and community life, including the commercial, educational, legal and public sectors

  • Exploring what it means to make a Christian contribution to debate and action about the common good and human flourishing

  • Developing the contribution of theology to public issues
