Mark Emerton - Senior Non-Executive Member
Mark was appointed by the Bishop in 2024, as the Senior Non Executive Member of Chapter.
He previously served in the Royal Navy up to the rank of Commander, during which time he qualified as a barrister. He later became an Employment Judge, retiring in 2024. He has had a long association with the Diocese of Portsmouth, representing the Diocese on General Synod (2015-2021), and served for many years on Diocesan Synod and on Bishop's Council. He was also until recently a member of the Archbishop's Council Remuneration and Conditions of Service Committee. Mark is a Master of the Bench at Gray's Inn, has Masters' Degrees in Business Law and Canon Law, a research interest in Human Rights and Freedom of Religion, and is Honorary Visiting Professor of Law at City St George’s, University of London. .
Mark is currently the Judicial Member of the Senior Salaries Review Body, advising the Government on salaries for senior public servants. He also holds a number of other governance and trustee roles, including as a University Governor, and Vice-Chair of Trustees at the Portsmouth-based charity, Veterans Outreach Support. He lives in Portsmouth with his wife Hannah, a Consultant at Queen Alexandra Hospital.
