TikTok’s Organ Maverick Hits Portsmouth Cathedral

Forget everything you think you know about organ music. Portsmouth Cathedral is set to shake up expectations with a one-night-only performance from REDUCTIO – the experimental sound project of composer and TikTok sensation Matt Walters – on Friday 20 June at 7:30pm.

REDUCTIO is unlike anything most audiences have heard before, blending live pipe organ with electronic manipulation and digital sound design, Matt Walters creates vast, cinematic soundscapes that are as haunting as they are hypnotic. A graduate of Homerton College, Cambridge, Walters has built a loyal following online – including thousands of fans across TikTok and Instagram – for his otherworldly performances and genre-defying approach to classical instruments.

This is not your usual cathedral concert. Expect deep bass, ambient textures, and moments of raw sonic power – all performed live on Portsmouth Cathedral’s magnificent Nicholson organ, reimagined in a way that feels completely new.

“I am looking forward to performing in the stunning space of Portsmouth Cathedral immensely, where I will be demonstrating the vast capability of the pipe organ with my varied programme of classical and contemporary music.”

Dr David Price, Organist and Master of the Choristers at Portsmouth Cathedral, said:

“The organ has an incredible capacity to move and inspire, not just in the context of traditional worship but also in more experimental settings. Matt’s work is both respectful of the instrument’s heritage and daring in its innovation. We’re delighted to welcome REDUCTIO to Portsmouth Cathedral and to offer our audiences something genuinely fresh and thought-provoking.”

Whether you’re into experimental music, atmospheric film scores, or just curious about what an organ can really do – this is a night for the musically adventurous.
