Great and Small: A Summer Celebration of Creatures

This summer, churches and cathedrals across England – including us here at Portsmouth Cathedral – are celebrating the animal kingdom in all its wonderful variety. From the creatures perched high above to the surprises in our stained glass, we’re turning our attention to the animals that surround us – sometimes hidden in plain sight.

We’re inviting you to keep your eyes peeled as you explore the Cathedral and grounds. You might spot a fox in stained glass, a fish in the floor tiles, or a bird etched into the woodwork. Or perhaps your own four-legged companion has joined you for a visit – they’re part of the picture too.

If you find an animal (real or artistic), we’d love you to capture it. Take a photo or short video and share it on social media with the hashtag #GreatAndSmall, tagging @PortsmouthCathedral so we can see it. We’ll be sharing some of our favourites throughout the summer.

This runs right through the season – so whether you’re here for a quiet moment, a guided tour, or just passing through, there’s time to take part.

Why? Because animals have always been woven into the story of sacred spaces – in art, in architecture, and in the everyday life around us. This is a chance to notice them, celebrate them, and maybe spot something you’ve never seen before.

So bring your camera and a bit of curiosity. We can’t wait to see what you discover – great and small.
