Assistant Verger and Precincts Officer

We have a new opportunity for an Assistant Verger and Precincts Officer to join our current verger team. You will work alongside colleagues and our volunteers to provide a safe, warm and welcoming place of worship and pilgrimage. Your work will be extremely varied and include both the ceremonial and technical elements of worship, care for the fabric of the Cathedral and cathedral buildings and setting up for and assisting with the delivery of concerts and events,

Hours: 30 hours per week normally over on a 5-day rota which will include weekends, evening and public holiday working, plus paid overtime.

Salary range: £14,820-£18.750

Contract: Permanent

Benefits: Employer Pension contribution of 7.5% (employee 1% of gross salary); pro-rata equivalent of 35 days’ leave including Public Holidays and two ‘given days’.

Reports: Head Verger and Precincts Manager

Job purpose

  • ·The Assistant Verger and Precincts Officer (AVPO) has a wide range of duties which include: the careful setting up and delivery of all liturgical matters; ensuring a welcoming, clean and safe environment for all working in, visiting or using the Cathedral and Cathedral House; organising a well-supplied and well-ordered Sacristy; and close liaison with Cathedral staff as appropriate, to ensure the day-to-day smooth running of the Cathedral for all users.

  • The AVPO will be responsible in helping to lead the day-to-day management of the Cathedral, Cathedral House and its environs.

  • The AVPO will also liaise closely with the other AVPO, volunteer vergers and other volunteers to help to effectively and safely manage all activities occurring in the Cathedral, Cathedral House and its environs.
