Director of  ‘Choir Church’

for St James’ Church, Milton, Portsmouth

Our vision is to help a large vibrant parish to start choirs for children and young people.  We wish to use the evangelistic nature of music in worship to grow a new congregation, showing that a liturgical and sacramentally based church can succeed alongside other forms of church planting.

Portsmouth Cathedral and St James’ Church, Milton wish to appoint a Director to set up choirs for children and young people based at St James’. There are exciting opportunities to work with schools in the parish and our aim is to create a vibrant community of young families that integrate into the life of St James’ though their involvement in music.

Salary £26,000

Volunteer Opportunities

From gardening to administration the Cathedral is fortunate to have volunteers who fulfil a wide variety of roles.  We are particularly looking for:

Cathedral Education Workshop Volunteer

To assist in the preparation and delivery of workshops to school, college and university students..

Counter-tenors, tenors, basses and Organ Scholar

Portsmouth Cathedral Choir and The Portsmouth Grammar School offer unique opportunities for young counter-tenors , tenors, basses and an organ scholar for the academic year 18/19.

Opportunities exist for gap year students (pre- or post-University) to spend a year working with the Portsmouth Cathedral Choirs, whilst working as departmental assistants at one of the country’s leading co-educational schools: Portsmouth Grammar School

The year involves daily choral worship in the Cathedral, major concerts and BBC broadcasts, choir tours (Estonia, Belgium & Italy 2014/15), and recordings.

Recent Portsmouth scholars have gone on to Christ Church Cathedral Oxford, King’s College London, Canterbury, and Hereford Cathedrals, as well as Guildhall, Royal Scottish, and Birmingham Conservatoires.
