Portsmouth Cathedral Notices Sunday 17th February 2019

Highlights

I am not sure that anyone who knows anything about church structures and governance would describe either the electoral roll or elections to chapter as a highlight in anyway!

However I do want to draw your attention to the changes detailed in these notices to our Cathedral Chapter. In their simplest form the changes are that Chapter will now have:

1. An elected member from amongst the Cathedral community and

2. One of our Churchwardens will also be an elected member of Chapter.

Both Churchwardens will now be elected for three year terms of office instead of the current one year to bring them into alignment with Lay Members of Chapter.

This will give the Cathedral community a much greater voice in the governance of the Cathedral and is in line with the Cathedrals Working Group report which is currently working its way through General Synod. Both the Bishop and Chapter (including the new Dean!) are delighted with these changes and think that it will make the governance of the Cathedral more representative and reflective of the community.

If you’d like to know more about these changes or the election process then please do join me for a short conversation after the 10.30am Eucharist on Sunday 3rd March. Whilst these may not be the most exciting highlights you’ll read this year they are perhaps some of the most significant.

With grateful thanks for your part in the life and mission of this Cathedral community.

The Reverend Canon Peter Leonard

Acting Dean and Canon Chancellor
