Portsmouth Cathedral Notices Sunday 22nd October 2017

Highlights

This week the Cathedral will be the host venue for some of the events belonging to Journeys Festival International Portsmouth. The Festival, which runs until 29th October, celebrates the artistic talents of exceptional refugee and asylum seeker artists and explores work that shares the refugee experience.

Outside the Cathedral the Container Project transforms a shipping container into an immersive project space for the Festival. The space on the south front will host the oral story‐telling exhibition from local migrants, new and old, provide a canvas for live ‘graffiti’ painting, and an exciting digital drumming project from The Gambia.

The container will also serve as a venue for further exhibitions. Artists Tony Spencer and Kye Wilson, will present a video installation depicting a West African musician known as Spearman. Using visual arts and technology the installation creates an exchange of vibrant Gambian arts and culture by transporting audiences to Spearman’s home village.

The exhibition will also present a series of oral stories that were recorded as part of the Journeys to Portsmouth project. This summer, the project introduced established migrants living in Portsmouth to those refugee and asylum seekers new to the city. Together they discussed topics of home, feelings of belonging and welcome in the city, whilst exploring the city and learning about Portsmouth’s extraordinary heritage.

Finally, the container will also host a dance performance in response to the Journeys to Portsmouth Project, by students from Admiral Lord Nelson School on Saturday 28th October at 3.30pm and 3.45pm.

All these events are free, and more information on Festival events throughout the city, including times and schedules, can be found on the event website at http://www.journeysfestival.com/.
