Welcome to Portsmouth Cathedral, the Cathedral of the Sea!
All our visitors, whatever their age are captured by the history of our building and enjoy learning about the people who have used it for over 800 years. By providing guided tours, craft activities, singing workshops, and hosting many other themed events, we offer a memorable learning experience.
The Bishop Kenneth Room is our dedicated education room in the North cloister. Workshop resources are kept here and there are facilities to give presentations and run small groups here too.
Church School Leavers' Workshops and Services - July 2018
Nearly 1200 Year 6 children from 29 schools across the Portsmouth Diocese came to Portsmouth Cathedral to celebrate the end of their years at primary school. The Diocesan Charity Chair Project saw each school bringing a chair, bought from a charity shop, dressed for an 'everyday hero'. Children created their own Coat-of-Arms to represent Year 6 pupils moving on, reflecting all they've achieved and value, as well as mottos for the future. Click on the images to scroll through.

School workshops at Portsmouth Cathedral
School visits are welcome throughout the year and can be tailored to focus on different aspects of the National Curriculum, RE (Christianity), History, Music, Art, Science and SMSC. When booking a visit, schools can select from a range of themed workshops listed below or email us to discuss your own curriculum and a bespoke visit.
There is no charge to enter Portsmouth Cathedral, nor for a guided tour, but please book your visit with the Education team. We can check the diary and let you know if there are any special services running which may restrict what you can see/do here. We can also make sure a guide is available for your tour. Workshops are £1 per pupil attending. Become a member of our School Friends scheme and receive a free or discounted workshop for your class — click here to find out more.

Our Easter workshops
The Education team at Portsmouth Cathedral run workshops in partnership with other churches, in schools and in the Cathedral.
In response to changes in the National Curriculum, we’ve developed new ideas to engage primary and secondary schools, reaching out to Further Education students too. As the ‘Cathedral of the Sea’, we have a unique position and role in the city of Portsmouth, and we look forward to your visit.
Come along to our Twilight Sessions to see some of the activities we offer for your school visit. Use this as your pre-visit tour and to learn about Portsmouth Cathedral and how workshops can be tailored to meet your curriculum and your ideas.
Meet our Education team and share ideas with other teachers attending. Tea, coffee, and cake are free. All sessions run from 4:00pm to 5:30pm. Email firstname.lastname@example.org to book.
We are grateful to The Friends of Portsmouth Cathedral who give generously to enable the children’s workshops to take place. We also thank a huge number of volunteers who help prepare resources and support children during the activity days.
